Cruise News - Maine Windjammer Association Cruises - Weddings
February 29 - 2012 : Weddings at Sea with The Maine Windjammer Association
Planning a windjammer wedding takes the stress out of wedding day. By the time you board, everything’s done. Captain Mike of the Angelique says, “I like weddings. I’m a sap, I get choked up. I usually do one or two a year. Sometimes the bride and groom don’t tell anyone they’re getting married. When the other guests find out, they’ll go ashore and get gifts, provide simple acts of kindness, even for strangers. They’ll even cry.”
Captain Kip of the Victory Chimes says, “You know the good thing about a wedding on board? You can gather 20-40 people that you know really well and you get to celebrate your wedding for more than one day. You get quality time on the wedding day itself. That’s pretty rare.”
As Captain Garth of the Lewis R. French says, “This is not the rough ocean. Passengers tell me constantly, ‘I had no idea there were islands off the coast of Maine.’ We are in a calm bay—Penobscot Bay—that is just perfect for windjamming. We are always in sight of land.” 3,000 islands dot the coast of Maine, providing shelter and spectacular vistas.
For couples who are finding love the second time around, a windjammer wedding may be just the ticket. Captain Kip says, “It’s so much more personal. A lot of my weddings are smaller, second weddings.”
Mike notes that with blended families, a windjammer cruise is the perfect way for two separate families to get to know one another. “We had a wedding charter. They were like the Brady Bunch—3 kids each. A lot of the extended family hadn’t met. It was awesome. What a great way to get to know someone.”
With families who live far apart, the few days spent aboard a windjammer may be the only time they’ll have to get to know one another. Without any of the stress of the outside world, a windjammer is the perfect place to tie the knot.
